An Observation on being OLD

It has been observed that a few cultures I have interacted with show respect to an old person in slightly different ways. Both, I find quite endearing. During the short time we were living in New York City we took public transportation every day. When waiting at a crowded bus stop young members of the Hispanic community would smile at me and let me get on before them with the comment "go ahead Mami". It sounds like Mommy but I think it is spelled differently. My response was to feel great affection for that young person.

Now we are in Hawaii. I have been shopping in many different types of stores. When I approach a young Hawaiian sales person with a question e.g. where can I find (fill in the blank), the response I get is "it is located over there Auntie". Auntie is a way of showing both respect and deference for a lady in her golden years. Once again affection is generated from the response received.

No big deal but just a wonderful reflection of two very different cultures. ;o)
